Course Overview

The NCC Education Level 3 Diploma in Computing (L3DC) introduces learners to the field of computing and provides the study skills, practical computing knowledge and mathematical foundations needed for progression into higher education.

Learners study essential IT concepts, computer systems, digital technologies, programming using Python and mathematical techniques relevant to computing. The programme also develops academic study, research and presentation skills to help learners prepare for higher-level study.

Eligibility

Applicants are expected to meet the following entry requirements:

  • Have completed GCSE/IGCSE O Levels or an equivalent qualification in their own country.
  • Have passed at least four subjects with minimum grades of C, grade 4 or equivalent.
  • English and Mathematics should be included within these minimum grades.
  • Where a learner has achieved a lower score in Mathematics, the learner may be required to pass a Mathematics placement test set by the centre, subject to NCC Education requirements.
  • Learners who do not hold the required English qualification must have a valid IELTS score of 5.5 or above, or pass the NCC Education Higher English Placement Test administered by an Accredited Partner Centre.
  • The qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 to 19 as well as adult learners.

This unit develops the academic skills required for successful higher education study. Learners explore independent learning, time management, information gathering, critical thinking, academic writing, referencing, research methods and effective oral presentations.

 

Digital World

This unit explores the development of digital computers and major innovations in digital technology. Learners examine the impact of technology on society, digital security threats and controls, and the cultural, ethical, environmental and legal issues associated with computing.

 

Introduction to Computer Science

This unit introduces fundamental computer science concepts, including computer systems, hardware, processors, memory, storage and software. Learners also develop an understanding of networks, the internet, security, computer ethics and the wider role of computing technology.

 

Introduction to Programming with Python

This unit introduces learners to software development and programming using Python. Learners develop programs using algorithms, pseudocode, variables, data types, selection, iteration and functions, while also learning about testing, debugging, documentation, modular programming, object-oriented concepts and file handling.

 

Mathematical Skills for Computing

This unit develops the mathematical skills needed for computing and further technical study. Learners work with algebra, equations, graphs, set theory, matrices, data presentation, descriptive statistics and probability, applying mathematical techniques to relevant computing problems.

Curriculum

University Progression

Successful completion of the NCC Education Level 3 Diploma in Computing (L3DC) enables learners to progress to the NCC Education Level 4 Diploma in Computing (L4DC), which NCC Education states is equivalent to Year 1 of a UK Bachelor’s degree.

Learners may also apply to Year 1 of a university degree programme following successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Computing. Admission to a particular university or degree remains subject to the entry and admissions requirements of the relevant institution.
